What is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic Therapy
Your body stores memories, and emotions. However, what you experience affects your nervous system, which changes how it functions, leading to anxiety, depression, panic, trauma, etc., to be kept in the body.
Our body is our greatest tool for healing. It communicates with us every day. Unfortunately, we have become so detached from our physical essence. I will work with you to form a relationship with your body and use it to release the sensations you feel, which are the critical components of emotions.
Common somatic techniques include sensory exercises (e.g., sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell), grounding exercises, physical exercises, movement-based exercises, and breath and mindfulness exercises.
I want you to feel yourself back into your body. The intention is for us to work together to understand what your body is communicating to you. I want you to find safety in your body and use it as a vessel to express emotions that have been stuck within your body for a while. When we root ourselves in our bodies, we come closer to healing.
Dynamic Breathwork
Together we use breathwork, different breathing patterns, and techniques to reach deeper within yourself and your state of being. Breathwork helps us come back into our bodies and explore our inner world. Your inner world might hold immense about of pain, sadness, anger, shame, or guilt, to name a few. Breathwork is the first step to intimately understanding your healing journey. Breathwork allows you to reach the energetic component of emotions, which continues to trigger us when it is not expressed.
For instance, I work with some clients on holotropic breathing. Holotropic breathing is a controlled practice that involves increasing your breathing pattern. This increased breathing pattern influences your mental, emotional, and physical states. This breathing technique expands your awareness and state of consciousness around yourself, your environment, experiences, etc. It allows you to reach deeper within yourself and identify stagnant energy/tension within yourself.
This stored tension could be contributing to or worsening mental and emotional stress. Together I will help you breathe back into your body and use your body as a map to your healing. It is essential to release, express, and externalize the energy and emotions within our mind, body, and spirit to achieve anxiety relief and depression relief. Once these unconscious and subconscious energetic and emotional blockages are released, it creates space for the healing to begin consciously.
Breathwork
Through our breath, we begin to understand the core of our human self. Breathwork is a powerful tool that focuses on cycles or patterns of inhalation and exhalation to start the process of emotional and physical release. Emotions such as anger, sadness, and grief can be released from deep within ourselves. The physical tension and stress associated with those emotions can be simultaneously released from parts of our body. During breathwork, you are the agent of your healing journey. You lead the speed at which you travel into the layers of your physical and emotional self. I am there as your guide. I will be there through the journey to help ground you, deepen your connection to yourself, and create comfort and safety.
Sound
The energy that certain sounds carry is incredibly impactful on our nervous systems. Therefore, music, instruments, chanting, various vocalizations, yelling, and grunting are tools that we can use to further deepen our healing experience. Sound helps our ability to stay focused during a body-centered healing session because it elevates our sensory experience of our emotional release.
Movement
You will be encouraged to physically express your emotional and energetic experience to further the release and access the relief awaiting you. You can move in whatever way you choose. Swaying, dancing, creatively flowing, and shaking is part of the process and are highly encouraged. Movement is the language of our body. When it moves, it speaks and discloses the emotional experiences we have stored within ourselves. Let your body communicate through movement.
Meditation
Often clients will experience a meditative state after their body-centered healing sessions. Sometimes in session, I will guide you into a meditative state to deeper your connection to your physical, emotional, and spiritual self. Meditation is a tool that we can use to explore and better understand the layers of ourselves and our existence (past, present, and future).
Touch
Mindful and conscious touch is a tool used in a session to deepen our energetic release and further connect ourselves with our pain centers. Touch provides the nurturance needed when processing and expressing complex energy, emotions, and experiences. Comforting yourself using touch will allow you to stay present in your healing experience and will continue to create safety and comfort.
Therapeutic Yoga
The muscles in our bodies do not work in an isolated manner, they work in groups. We call these groups, muscle chains. Some of their main functions are maintaining our posture and protecting our bones, among others. Furthermore, when it comes to our emotions, muscle chains also play a big role as they store our unresolved traumas. Our bodies have memory and trauma activates this memory causing it to always be active in our bodies, triggering these emotions, which trigger our minds and lead to obsessive thoughts.
Yoga serves as the best therapy for muscle chains using deep and prolonged positions which help stretch and elongate our muscle chains. When you hold a pose you strengthen it, but when you don’t you stop the energy from flowing. We move the body to loosen the emotions, and then we use breath work to expel them. This helps us heal faster, and more thoroughly, working with our body, mind, and emotions all at the same time.
